Soundtrack to the early 1990s

Throughout the course of Dave and Graham's travels in Green Kiddies, they are accompanied by the music of the time. Starting with early 'warehouse' music (first heard in the late 80s), dance music in the UK quickly took off and transformed itself into Techno, Hardcore, Balearic, Jungle, Garage and Drum N Bass to name just a few.

I have tried to do the impossible by listing some of what I consider to be the tunes that broke new ground in the music industry below.

Whilst not always the best, they were some of the first... (Plus I've thrown in a few favourites you might not have heard for a while/before).

Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives

For me, Playing with Knives is the official anthem of the 1990s. Played at the Eclipse in Coventry on the night I lost my 'Rave virginity', this tune will forever bring back sweet memories of British Knights trainers, Puma jackets and Global Hypercolour tops.

T99 - Anasthasia

One of the first true dance tunes to cross over into the mainstream and enter the UK pop music charts. Sounds a bit dated now but was truly ground breaking at the time.

Quadrophonia - Quadrophonia

Like Anasthasia, this Belgian tune gained mass popularity and brought 'underground' dance music to a wider audience.

Brothers in Rythm - Such a Good Feeling

First heard at World Party, Manby Park in Louth. An absolute gem that summed up the vibe of the time. Much copied but nobody ever came close.

Orbital - Chime

Best experienced whilst 'speaker surfing'. More a staying-in tune than pure dance, in my opinion, but a true Golden Oldie.

Asha - J J Tribute

God I wished I could have played the piano! Supposedly a tribute to Janis Joplin (I'm sure none of us ever knew this - just thought it was a top tune!). Absolute monster!

The Stone Roses - Fools Gold

Lest we forget that whilst all this jumping around was going on, there was more 'serious' music afoot in the North West...

Manix  - Feel Real Good

Seeing Manix do a live PA at Bridlington's Leisure Dome was a memory that burned itself into my brain (as well as lighting a 'poppers fag' but let's not go into that). Always felt 'real good' when this came on! How could you not?

PKA - Let me hear you say yeah!

One of Dave's favourites from back in the day. Sounds slow in comparison to todays Hard House and Trance but this was a true floor-filler of its time.

2 Bad Mice - Bombscare

I remember this playing at 7AM at Hull's first legal rave, New Dimension. My knees were crippled and I was totally washed out. I still managed to shuffle around to this bad boy though!

Degrees of Motion - Shine On

The answer to our prayers. Beautiful tune to hear when the sun comes up!

Liquid - Sweet Harmony

Nearly made me cry every time this came on. We watched Rozzalla at Lexington Avenue nightclub in Hull (she did a PA along with Top Buzz) and this came on right near the beginning - there was only one idiot dancing at the time....

The Prodigy - Your Love

Dark, dancy but with uplifting pianos, this tune had it all. I remember being scared out of my Sambas to this. A Welly Club classic.

Alison Limerick - Where Love Lives

You can't talk about dance music without doffing your cap to Ms Limerick. Those piano chords still send tingles down the spine.

Rythm for Reasons - Grand National (Bad Boy)

I remember my mate DEF mixing this Bad Boy in and out of everything! Oh, and rubbing Vicks on your nads - silly, silly boys.

Cubic 22 - Night In motion (Party Time)

This tune became so well known it ended up being the background music for Channel 4s American Football show. A far cry from when I first heard it at Aston Villa's sports arena.

Lennie D Ice - We are I.E.

Early tuneage. A Mickey Finn favourite if I'm not mistaken...? Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.... and for some people (Dave), they haven't.

You can also try before you buy when you visit Juno Records they stock loads of Old School classics on vinyl and CD.
